Local Athletes Join Inaugural Women’s Pro Baseball League

For the first time in over seven decades, professional women’s baseball is returning to the United States. The Women’s Pro Baseball League (WPBL) is set to launch its inaugural season on August 1, 2026, marking a significant milestone for the sport that has not seen a professional circuit since the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League concluded in 1954.

The league will feature four competing clubs: the New York Heights, the Boston Hunters, the Los Angeles Queens, and the San Francisco Firebells. All regular-season and playoff matchups are scheduled to take place at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois, with broadcast coverage provided by ESPN and the Scripps Sports Network.

Among the athletes joining the ranks are two local standouts: Sabrina Robinson of Morristown, New Jersey, and Brooklyn’s own Nylah Ramirez. Both have been drafted to play for the Boston Hunters. Robinson, who previously founded a women’s club baseball team at Montclair State University, noted that the existence of a professional path for women is a development she once considered unlikely to occur during her playing career. Ramirez, a pitcher with experience on Puerto Rico’s Women’s National team, expressed her focus on securing a championship title during the league's debut season.

Players have highlighted the unique intensity and camaraderie within the women’s baseball community, noting that many participants have spent years navigating barriers to remain in the sport. The season is slated to run through mid-September, with the opening game featuring the New York Heights against the Los Angeles Queens, followed by a matchup between the Boston Hunters and the San Francisco Firebells on August 2.
