Privacy Policy
Effective date: July 22, 2026. Operator: New Village Daily. Jurisdiction: New York, United States.
Who we are
New Village Daily (“we,” “us”) publishes local news for Greenwich Village and Lower Manhattan. Contact for privacy questions: Admin@newvillagedaily.com.
Information we collect
Newsletter signups. When you subscribe to the Village Briefing we collect your email address and, optionally, your first name. We record the date of your consent and the version of this notice in effect at that time.
Voting. To prevent duplicate voting on stories, your browser generates a random anonymous identifier that is stored in your browser and hashed on our server. This identifier is not tied to your name, email, IP address, or any account.
Admin accounts. If you are an editor with an admin account, we store your email, hashed password (managed by our authentication provider), and role assignment.
Contributor accounts. Approved contributors have a profile with a display name, optional short bio, and an optional avatar image. Avatars are stored privately and shown only to the contributor and editors — they are not published on the public site. We record account-management events (sign-in, sign-out, profile and avatar changes, story reservations, video submissions, and review decisions) in an internal activity log used solely for editorial operations and security. Video packages contributors upload for assigned stories are stored privately and are visible only to editors reviewing them; they are not made public through this site.
Server logs. Our hosting infrastructure receives standard request information (IP address, user agent, timestamps, requested URL) for security and reliability. We do not use these logs for advertising or profiling.
Cookies and local storage. See our Cookie Settings page for the full list. In short: essential storage keeps admin sessions and the voting identifier; optional storage remembers whether you agreed to load Google Maps.
We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, and we do not use tracking pixels, advertising networks, or cross-site behavioral analytics.
How we use your information
- To send you the Village Briefing you asked for, and to honor unsubscribe requests.
- To operate the site: authenticate admins, count votes without duplication, and load the map when you enable it.
- To respond to reader corrections, privacy requests, and legal obligations.
Third parties
Google Maps. The interactive map is provided by Google. When you enable it, your IP address and browser information are sent to Google, subject to Google's Privacy Policy and Maps Platform Terms. We do not send Google your email, subscriber status, or votes.
Hosting and database. Our site and database run on our managed infrastructure providers. Subscriber records, admin accounts, and article content are stored there. These providers act as processors under our instructions.
AI research assistance. Some articles are researched and drafted with the help of AI tools operated on our behalf. These tools do not receive newsletter, voting, or account data.
Retention
Subscribers: retained until you unsubscribe, then a suppression record is kept to honor your request. Admin accounts: retained while active. Voting identifiers: retained with the story record. Server logs: retained for a short operational window by our infrastructure provider.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, and other US states, and the EEA/UK if applicable), you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or port your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You may also opt out of “sales” or “sharing” of personal information — we do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
To exercise a right, email Admin@newvillagedaily.com. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
Security
We use industry-standard technical and organizational measures, including encryption in transit, hashed passwords, role-based access, and row-level database security. No system is perfectly secure; we work to remedy issues promptly.
International visitors
The site is operated from New York, United States. If you access it from elsewhere, your information will be processed in the United States.
Changes
We will update this policy from time to time and change the effective date above. Material changes will be noted at the top of the page.
