East Village Vintage Staple White Trash to Close After Three Decades

After more than three decades of operation, the vintage furniture and home goods retailer White Trash is preparing to close its doors. Co-founder Stuart Zamsky confirmed that the shop, located at 304 E. Fifth St., is expected to hold its final day of business around August 10, 2026.

Zamsky, who established the business alongside his wife, Kim Wurster, in 1995, described the decision to retire as bittersweet. According to Zamsky, several factors contributed to the timing of the closure. While he noted that rising rent played a role, he emphasized that the decision was also driven by the physical condition of the building—which he described as difficult to maintain during winter months—and a desire to step away from the daily demands of running the shop at age 65.

What began as a venture for two actors looking to move beyond survival jobs eventually became a neighborhood institution. Over the years, the shop served as a de facto community hub, particularly through Zamsky’s involvement with the Fifth Street Block Association. The space functioned as an informal meeting point where residents gathered to discuss local concerns and connect with one another.

Reflecting on the shop’s history, Zamsky noted that the business provided a sense of stability that allowed the couple to raise their two sons, who spent time in the store after school and eventually worked there as employees. He also highlighted the personal significance of the shop’s iconic Airstream trailer sign, which he constructed with the help of his late father.

As the shop prepares to wind down, it is currently hosting its first-ever storewide sale, offering 25% off inventory. While Zamsky and Wurster plan to travel, they have not yet determined what their future involvement in the resale industry might entail. The shop currently maintains operating hours from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
