Cleanup efforts are underway across parts of Westchester County following a severe weather event on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, that brought heavy rainfall and intense winds to the region. According to the National Weather Service, some areas experienced nearly five inches of rain during the storm.

In the Country Ridge neighborhood of Rye Brook, residents reported significant tree damage, with some limbs narrowly missing homes. On Lawridge Drive, downed trees impacted power lines, resulting in localized electrical fires and outages. Village Administrator Christopher Bradbury noted that while the damage was isolated, local highway crews and utility workers were deployed quickly to clear roadways and restore service to the approximately 20 affected households.

While no injuries were reported, residents described the conditions as alarming. Some homeowners sought shelter in their basements after hearing reports of a tornado watch in the area.

"The wind was blowing so fiercely," one resident told reporters, describing the moment they took cover.

In addition to the damage in Rye Brook, neighboring Purchase also reported impacts from the storm. Local officials have submitted photographic evidence of the destruction to the Westchester Department of Emergency Management, which has forwarded the materials to the National Weather Service for analysis. Federal meteorologists have indicated they will not deploy a survey crew to the site but will instead rely on the submitted imagery to determine if a tornado touched down during the afternoon.

As of Wednesday, the investigation into the exact nature of the weather event remains ongoing.
