Prospect Lefferts Gardens Uber Driver Recovering After Violent Carjacking

A 21-year-old Uber driver is facing a difficult recovery after being shot during an attempted carjacking in Brooklyn. The incident, which took place on July 11 around 4:15 a.m. near Parkside and Bedford Avenues, has left the victim, Danish Sarwar, in critical condition for over a week.

According to reports, the shooting occurred after Sarwar picked up a passenger. The individual allegedly robbed the driver of his mobile phone and $500 in cash before shooting him in the neck as he attempted to surrender his vehicle. The suspect then fled the scene. Police have described the suspect as wearing a black sweatshirt, blue shorts, a black mask, and black shoes, and noted he was carrying a book bag at the time of the encounter.

Sarwar, a Pakistani immigrant who had been working seven days a week to support his family, was unconscious for 10 days following the attack. His brother, Hamza Sarwar, stated that the victim is currently receiving care through feeding tubes and has been unable to move or feel his left arm. While the victim has recently regained consciousness and begun to communicate with the assistance of a medical microphone, his family emphasizes that his path to recovery remains uncertain and arduous.

Dashcam footage from the vehicle reportedly captured the suspect removing his face mask during the incident. Authorities have not yet confirmed if an arrest has been made in connection with the case. The victim's family has expressed deep concern regarding the dangers faced by ride-share drivers, with his brother stating he no longer wishes for himself or his sibling to continue working in the industry.
