Severe Storms Disrupt Regional Transit and Commutes

A powerful storm system swept through the Tri-State area on Monday, bringing heavy rainfall that triggered flash flood warnings and caused widespread travel disruptions. The severe weather, which saw rainfall rates reach between one and two inches per hour in some locations, prompted the New York City Emergency Management Department to activate its Flash Flood Emergency Plan.

Commuters faced hazardous conditions throughout the morning. In New Jersey, flooding led to stalled vehicles in Newark and Paterson, while road closures were reported in Westwood.

Transit systems also sustained damage from the storm. In Smithtown, Long Island, a Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train struck a tree that had fallen onto the tracks, shattering a window in the engineer's compartment. One person sustained minor injuries in the collision. Meanwhile, in Westport, Connecticut, a charter bus traveling on I-95 was struck by a falling tree around 6:45 a.m. Authorities reported that at least one window on the bus was broken, and a small number of the 16 passengers onboard suffered minor injuries.

While the immediate threat of flash flooding remained a primary concern for local officials, the combination of high water and debris-strewn roadways created significant challenges for morning travelers across the region. Residents are advised to monitor local weather alerts as conditions continue to evolve.
