Temakase Hand Roll Bar Departs Second Avenue

Temakase Hand Roll Bar has shuttered its original location at 157 Second Avenue, marking the end of a six-year tenure at the East Village storefront. The restaurant, which first opened its doors shortly before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, announced the closure earlier this month.

Founder Liron Michaeli stated via social media that the decision to vacate the space was driven by "changes to the building." The property at 157 Second Avenue was among a portfolio of six East Village buildings acquired by Ryco Capital for $103 million in 2024.

In a message to patrons, ownership expressed gratitude for the neighborhood's support, noting that the business managed to grow from a small concept into a multi-location operation despite the challenges of its initial launch. The brand is currently transitioning its East Village presence to a new flagship location at 252 Greene Street.

While the Second Avenue site has historically proven difficult for long-term restaurant tenants—having previously hosted establishments such as Alder, Biang!, Yuan, and Savor Por Favor—Temakase found success during its stay. The brand continues to operate other locations, including a site on Kent Avenue in Williamsburg and another on West 28th Street in Manhattan.
