Sunset Park Residents Report Sanitation Concerns at Northern Entrance

Community members in Sunset Park are voicing frustration over the condition of the park’s northern entrance at 41st Street and Sixth Avenue, which has served as a primary staging area for trash collection throughout the summer. According to local reports, the site has become a collection point for various items, including loose litter, tree branches, and discarded household goods.

Area residents have expressed concerns that the accumulation of waste has attracted pests and created significant odors. Some neighbors noted that the visibility of the pile has encouraged unauthorized dumping of household trash, further exacerbating the situation. One resident described the area as having become a nuisance, noting that the proximity of the waste to the park entrance has impacted the experience of those visiting the greenspace.

In response to these concerns, the NYC Parks Department stated that the site is part of their broader logistics for managing waste across the park’s hilly terrain. A spokesperson for the department, Gregg McQueen, emphasized that staff perform daily cleanups at the location. The department also reminded the public that disposing of household waste in public parks is prohibited and carries a potential fine of $5,000.

While the department maintains that it is working to keep the park clean, officials acknowledged the challenges posed by the current staging process. To address the issue, the city has announced plans to install sealed trash containers at Sunset Park. These upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of 2026, which the department hopes will improve waste management and mitigate the current sanitation issues.

It remains unclear whether the introduction of sealed receptacles will be sufficient to deter the illegal dumping of household waste that has contributed to the current pile-up. The Parks Department continues to urge visitors to carry out any trash they bring into the park to help maintain the cleanliness of the grounds.
