Radio City Music Hall Upgrades Audio Experience with Sphere Technology

Radio City Music Hall has undergone a significant technical transformation, integrating the Sphere Immersive Sound system to modernize its century-old acoustic environment. The installation, which was completed in November 2025 ahead of the annual Christmas Spectacular, marks the second time this technology has been deployed in a New York City venue, following its introduction at the Beacon Theatre.

Developed for the Sphere in Las Vegas, the system relies on 3D audio beamforming and wave field synthesis. According to technical specifications, the setup incorporates more than 7,000 individually amplified loudspeaker drivers. This configuration is designed to provide a uniform listening experience, aiming to deliver clear, balanced audio to audience members regardless of whether they are seated in the front row or the back of the third mezzanine.

Josephine Vaccarello, Executive Vice President of Live for Madison Square Garden Entertainment, stated that the goal of the project was to bring the historic theater into the future by ensuring consistent volume and clarity throughout the space. The technology allows audio engineers to spatialize sound, directing specific audio elements to different sections of the venue to tailor the acoustic balance for each performance.

Since the system's implementation, it has been utilized for various high-profile productions, including the New York Philharmonic’s recent season and the current run of "Les Misérables: The Arena Concert Spectacular." Production teams for the latter noted that the system facilitates a more immersive sonic environment, allowing for precise vocal intelligibility and spatial effects for the cast and orchestra. Following the conclusion of the current concert series, the venue is scheduled to host composer Joe Hisaishi for a performance featuring music from Studio Ghibli films.

By utilizing this advanced audio architecture, venue operators aim to provide a high-fidelity experience that mimics intimate listening environments while maintaining the capacity of the large-scale theater.
