Queens Community Honors Fallen Staff Sergeant Angel Rampersad

Residents of Ozone Park and Howard Beach gathered on Monday evening for a candlelight vigil to mourn the loss of U.S. Staff Sergeant Angel Sarah Rampersad. The service member was killed approximately one week prior during an Iranian missile strike on an air base in Jordan.

During the vigil, attendees honored Rampersad’s commitment to her duties. Pastor David Yankana, who knew the soldier from her youth following her family's relocation from Trinidad, described her service as a profound expression of love and a dedication to protecting others. Queens Borough President Donovan Richards highlighted her courage, noting that while she was not born in the United States, she ultimately gave her life in its service.

In recognition of her sacrifice, it was announced at the event that Rampersad had been posthumously promoted. The gathering served as a moment of communal support for her grieving family, who expressed gratitude for the outpouring of sympathy from the neighborhood.

Local officials, including Ozone Park Block Association President Sam Esposito, pledged to ensure that Rampersad’s legacy is preserved. Discussions are currently underway regarding potential tributes to the fallen soldier. Proposals being considered by community leaders include renaming the intersection where she resided, a portion of Cross Bay Boulevard, and PS 63 in her honor. The family is expected to hold a final memorial service later this week.
