New York City Braces for Severe Storms and Potential Flash Flooding Tuesday

New Yorkers should prepare for another round of volatile weather on Tuesday, as a frontal system moves into the region. The National Weather Service has issued a warning for potential severe conditions, including heavy rainfall, high winds, and a slight possibility of hail or a tornado.

According to National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Goodman, the city is expected to experience two distinct waves of precipitation. The first round is anticipated to arrive around midday, followed by a second surge in the early evening. The storms are projected to conclude by approximately 10 p.m.

Forecasters have identified flash flooding as the primary concern for the area, followed by the risk of damaging wind gusts, which could reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. While the probability of a tornado remains low, officials have noted that the risk is not zero.

This week’s forecast follows a period of intense weather that saw heavy thunderstorms impact the city on Saturday, July 18. During that event, Central Park recorded 1.62 inches of rainfall. Tuesday’s incoming system could mirror those conditions, potentially delivering several inches of rain across the five boroughs.

Beyond the immediate threat of storms, the city has recently contended with poor air quality stemming from Canadian wildfires. While the smoke levels peaked last week, officials suggest that shifting wind patterns could potentially bring hazy conditions back to the region if the fires continue to burn.

There is a silver lining to the incoming storm front: the region is expected to see a reprieve from the recent extreme heat. Temperatures for the remainder of the week are forecasted to remain in the 70s to mid-80s. However, the unsettled pattern may persist, with a 50% chance of additional rain and thunderstorms lingering into Wednesday.

Authorities are advising residents to remain vigilant, monitor local weather updates, and take necessary precautions if severe weather warnings are issued for their specific area.
