August Film Guide: Outdoor Screenings and New Releases Across NYC

As summer reaches its peak, New York City’s cultural calendar offers a diverse array of cinematic experiences. Whether seeking refuge from the heat in a climate-controlled theater or enjoying a breeze at an outdoor venue, moviegoers have several notable options this August.

Outdoor cinema enthusiasts can head to the Brooklyn Bridge Park Harbor View Lawn on August 6 for a screening of the 1993 classic *Jurassic Park*. Later in the month, on August 28, Industry City’s Courtyard 5/6 will host a collection of experimental short films titled *Trapped: Mind-Altering Shorts 2026*, presented by Rooftop Films.

For those preferring traditional theaters, the month includes several premieres and repertory screenings. The horror film *Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma*, directed by Jane Schoenbrun, arrives at the Angelika Film Center and AMC Lincoln Square 13 on August 7. The following day, August 8, the Old American Can Factory will host the U.S. premiere of the surreal horror-comedy *Sour Minnows*, which will be accompanied by an afterparty.

Fans of gritty urban cinema can catch Walter Hill’s 1979 action film *The Warriors* at Metrograph on August 8 and 14. Meanwhile, Film at Lincoln Center is scheduled to screen *Family Movie* on August 19 as part of its "Scary Movies XIV" series, with a planned Q&A session featuring Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, and Travis Bacon.

Documentary and international cinema also have a presence this month. The band-focused documentary *Butthole Surfers: The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt* is set to open on August 28 at Alamo Drafthouse locations in Downtown Brooklyn, Lower Manhattan, and Staten Island. On the same day, Film Forum will begin screenings of *Filipiñana*, a debut feature by director Rafael Manuel that examines social hierarchies within a Philippine golf club.
