NCJWNY Seeks Volunteers for Annual Back-to-School Initiative

The National Council of Jewish Women New York (NCJWNY) is preparing to host its annual Back 2 School program, an initiative designed to provide essential supplies and clothing to underserved children. From August 2 through August 5, 2026, the organization’s four-story headquarters at 241 West 72nd Street will function as a temporary department store for approximately 300 to 350 students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade.

Participants, who are selected through various social service organizations, will receive a comprehensive package of new items at no cost. The distribution includes winter coats, outfits, sneakers, socks, hats, gloves, scarves, water bottles, books, and backpacks pre-filled with school supplies. A core component of the program is the autonomy granted to the children, who are encouraged to make their own selections.

To facilitate the event, the NCJWNY is currently seeking adult volunteers to serve as "private shoppers." These volunteers are paired with children to guide them through the facility, offering assistance and support as they browse the available items. According to Aviva Zadorf, the organization's director of advocacy and volunteer services, no prior experience is required for the role. Prospective volunteers receive an orientation that includes guidance on interacting with the children and managing the shopping process, with additional staff members available on-site to provide support.

Organizers note that the program aims to create a positive, supportive environment for the students. The initiative is scheduled to conclude on August 5, after which the building will return to its standard operations as a social services center. Those interested in participating as volunteers can register through the organization's online portal.
