Mayor Mamdani dismisses House Speaker’s ‘mini Mamdanis’ warning following Michigan primary

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani characterized House Speaker Mike Johnson as "deeply out of touch" on Wednesday, responding to the Republican leader’s recent warnings about the influence of progressive candidates. The critique followed the Michigan Democratic primary, where physician and former public health official Abdul El-Sayed narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens by less than one percentage point.

Following the primary results, Johnson took to social media to warn that the nation risked being "overrun by Mini Mamdanis." While Johnson did not explicitly name El-Sayed, the Mayor addressed the comment during a street-safety press conference at City Hall. Mamdani, a self-identified democratic socialist, dismissed the Speaker’s rhetoric, suggesting that the focus on "money out of politics" and "Medicare for all" represents the concerns of working-class Americans rather than the ideological threats suggested by Republican leadership.

El-Sayed’s victory sets up a high-stakes general election contest against Republican former Rep. Mike Rogers. The race is expected to be a significant factor in the broader struggle for control of the U.S. Senate. Former President Donald Trump also weighed in on the results, utilizing social media to criticize El-Sayed and make unsubstantiated claims regarding election integrity in Wayne County.

When asked about the comparison to El-Sayed, Mamdani praised the Michigan candidate’s background in public health and his focus on economic issues. However, the Mayor remained noncommittal regarding whether he would extend his political involvement beyond New York City to support El-Sayed’s campaign.

"My focus thus far has been on New York City," Mamdani stated when pressed on the possibility of traveling to Michigan before the November election.

Mamdani’s political influence has been a subject of recent discussion following the June primary cycle in New York City, where all three congressional candidates he endorsed—Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier—emerged victorious. Despite these successes, the Mayor has yet to formally engage in a federal race outside of his home jurisdiction.
