Great Neck Resident Defies Odds Following Spinal Injury

A 47-year-old Great Neck father has achieved a significant recovery, walking unassisted 15 months after a severe spinal cord injury left him paralyzed from the neck down. Seth Kurpiel, an avid athlete and former marathoner, sustained the injury following a fall from a swing set.

Upon arrival at the North Shore University Hospital Trauma Center, Kurpiel underwent surgery to realign his dislocated spinal cord. According to Dr. Sheng-fu Larry Lo, Chief of Northwell Spinal Surgery, the medical team initially estimated that there was less than a five percent chance that Kurpiel would ever walk again. Despite these projections, Kurpiel began an intensive rehabilitation process shortly after the accident.

Medical staff and therapists noted that Kurpiel’s background as a competitive athlete and his consistent focus on recovery were central to his progress. His physical therapist, Kiera Donovan, reported that Kurpiel maintained a rigorous work ethic throughout his treatment. His wife, Morgan Kurpiel, a registered oncology nurse, provided ongoing support throughout the recovery period.

Reflecting on the transition from his previous lifestyle—which included daily early-morning runs—to his post-accident reality, Kurpiel noted that his primary goal during the early stages of his recovery was simply to regain the ability to embrace his family. While the recovery process was extensive, Kurpiel has now reached the milestone of walking out of the hospital, a result that medical professionals have described as remarkable given the severity of the initial trauma.
