Federal Charges Filed in Arson of Historic South Bushwick Church

Federal authorities have taken a 24-year-old Brooklyn resident into custody in connection with the fire that decimated the South Bushwick Reformed Church earlier this summer. The suspect, identified as John Jones, was apprehended overnight following an unrelated shoplifting incident in Manhattan, where officers discovered an active warrant related to the church blaze.

According to federal prosecutors, surveillance footage captured the suspect purchasing a lighter shortly before the fire broke out on the afternoon of June 19. The resulting inferno consumed the historic wooden structure, which had served the community for over 175 years. Investigators have stated that the suspect appears to have no prior affiliation with the congregation.

The destruction of the church has left a significant void in the neighborhood. Rev. Dr. James E. Steward II, leader of the congregation, noted that the site had long functioned as a central hub for local life, hosting everything from baptisms and weddings to community meals and educational giveaways. While the main sanctuary was reduced to rubble, the church’s 1881 parish hall survived the fire, allowing the property to maintain its landmark status.

Community leaders have expressed a mix of relief and sorrow regarding the arrest. Robert Camacho, chairman of Community Board 4, emphasized that the act of arson was inexcusable and urged the community to support the congregation’s ongoing efforts to rebuild. A fundraising campaign has been established to assist with the recovery process, which church leadership maintains will be guided by a commitment to unity and resilience.

The investigation into the incident involved multiple agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The suspect is expected to appear in federal court in Brooklyn to face the arson charges.
