Fatal Explosion and Five-Alarm Fire Displaces Dozens in Norwood

A residential building in the Norwood neighborhood of the Bronx remains under investigation following a catastrophic explosion and five-alarm fire that occurred on Wednesday. The incident, which began shortly after noon, resulted in the death of one individual and left 14 others injured.

According to the FDNY, the blaze necessitated a massive response from over 300 firefighters. The fire was brought under control by approximately 8 p.m. Wednesday evening. Officials reported that the explosion caused significant structural collapses on the building's second and third floors, which complicated search and rescue operations. A man, believed to be in his 40s, was discovered deceased on the third floor following the collapse.

Among the 14 injured, authorities confirmed that two civilians sustained life-threatening injuries, while two others were treated for serious conditions. Four additional civilians and six firefighters also suffered injuries during the event. The Red Cross is currently assisting 45 displaced residents from 18 households, as the city's Department of Buildings evaluates the structural integrity of the property before any potential re-entry.

While residents reported smelling gas prior to the blast, FDNY officials stated that a review of department records showed no prior reports of gas leaks at the address this year. Con Edison has since disconnected gas service to the building. The exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation by city authorities.
