Far Rockaway Man Faces Murder Charges Following Fatal Standoff

A 33-year-old Far Rockaway man is facing multiple felony charges, including murder and arson, following a violent barricade situation that resulted in the deaths of his mother and sister. Kegan Thomas was taken into custody on Saturday after an armed confrontation with police at a residence on Ocean Crest Boulevard near Beach 25 Street.

According to the NYPD, the incident began shortly before noon when the suspect’s wife contacted emergency services. She reported that her husband was armed and experiencing a mental health crisis. Officers arrived to find the home in a volatile state; the wife informed police that she had heard a gunshot and observed a body inside the residence.

As police established a perimeter and awaited the arrival of the Emergency Service Unit (ESU), a significant explosion occurred within the home. Shortly thereafter, Thomas emerged from the structure wearing a tactical vest and carrying a shotgun. When he failed to comply with commands to drop the weapon, officers opened fire. Thomas was struck and subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition. He is expected to be arraigned once his medical status allows.

Inside the burning home, investigators discovered the bodies of 56-year-old Clemer Ponce and 28-year-old Selena Ponce, both of whom had sustained gunshot wounds. A dog and a cat also perished in the fire, which necessitated the evacuation of nearby residences.

Assistant Chief Christopher Mcintosh noted that the suspect, a military veteran, had no prior criminal record or documented history of mental health issues with the department. In addition to murder and arson, Thomas faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated cruelty to animals, and criminal possession of a weapon. The investigation into the motive behind the attack remains ongoing.
