Fallen Tree Blocks Gramercy Street Amid Heavy Rainfall

A large tree split and collapsed onto a roadway in Gramercy on Monday morning, August 3, 2026, as heavy rain moved through the city. The incident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. on East 18th Street, situated between 1st and 2nd Avenues.

According to reports from the FDNY, the fallen tree obstructed the street and caused damage to several parked vehicles in the vicinity. While the collapse caused significant disruption to the local thoroughfare, officials confirmed that no injuries were reported in connection with the event.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to manage the obstruction, utilizing specialized cutting equipment to break down the trunk and branches. By Monday afternoon, the area remained taped off as crews continued their work. The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation has been notified to assist with the aftermath.

The collapse took place during a period of intense rainfall across the five boroughs. City officials had issued flood warnings earlier in the day, with forecasts calling for two to three inches of precipitation. The New York City Emergency Management department cautioned residents, particularly those in basement apartments, to remain vigilant as the risk of flash flooding persists throughout the evening.

As of Monday afternoon, the roadway remained blocked to traffic. It is unclear when the site will be fully cleared and reopened to the public.
