Investigation Underway After Intruder Enters Elmhurst School with Hammer

Authorities are investigating a violent disturbance at the Jewish Institute of Queens in Elmhurst that resulted in the hospitalization of an 8-year-old student on Tuesday morning.

According to law enforcement, the incident began shortly before 10:50 a.m. when a 42-year-old man allegedly chased a woman from the street into the school facility at 60-05 Woodhaven Blvd. Security personnel on-site intervened to disarm the individual, but police report that the suspect managed to break free during the process. In the ensuing struggle, the man allegedly shoved an 8-year-old boy into a fence, causing a laceration to the child's head. Emergency medical services transported the student to Long Island Jewish Medical Center, where he is currently listed in stable condition.

Officers from the 112th Precinct arrived at the school shortly after the incident was reported and took the suspect into custody. While the individual’s identity has not been disclosed, investigators noted that he has a recent history of police contact, including a July 24 arrest in Manhattan for an alleged theft at Bergdorf Goodman and a July 8 arrest in Queens for petit larceny.

The event is being treated as a potential hate crime, according to sources familiar with the investigation. This comes amid a broader period of heightened concern regarding antisemitic incidents across New York City. While some local officials have suggested that recent political rhetoric may be contributing to a climate of hostility, Mayor Zohran Mamdani emphasized during a press conference on Monday that his criticisms of foreign policy should not be conflated with animosity toward the Jewish community.

"My top priority is keeping every single New Yorker safe," the mayor stated.

Criminal charges against the suspect are pending as the investigation continues.
