Columbus Circle Station Escalators Face New Outage

Commuters navigating the 59th Street-Columbus Circle subway station are once again contending with non-functional escalators. The equipment, which provides access between the street level and the station mezzanine, has been out of service since early July, marking a frustrating return to transit hurdles for local riders.

This latest closure follows a significant period of inactivity for the same escalators, which were previously shuttered for over a year between the summer of 2024 and November 2025. That extended outage was attributed to structural damage involving the ceiling above the equipment. While the escalators were restored to service late last year, their current failure has prompted renewed concern from the public regarding the reliability of the station's infrastructure.

According to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s official elevator and escalator status portal, the current outage is categorized as a repair. The agency has provided an estimated return-to-service date of August 1, 2026, at 8 a.m. However, the timeline for these repairs remains subject to change.

Responsibility for the maintenance of these specific escalators lies with the Related Companies, the real estate developer that oversees the adjacent Deutsche Bank Center, rather than the MTA. Representatives for the developer did not immediately provide details regarding the nature of the current mechanical issues or confirm whether the projected August 1 reopening date remains accurate.

For now, passengers are required to utilize the station's staircases to reach the mezzanine level. The recurring nature of these outages has drawn criticism from regular commuters who rely on the station for daily transit, many of whom expressed surprise that the equipment required such significant attention only eight months after its last major repair cycle.
