A Closer Look at the Kebab Halabi at Bustan
The Upper West Side eatery features a signature lamb dish prepared under a unique bread-sealed clay pot.

Bustan, located at 487 Amsterdam Avenue on the Upper West Side, has drawn attention for its pan-Mediterranean menu, which draws inspiration from across Southern Europe and North Africa. The restaurant, situated between West 83rd and 84th streets, emphasizes a communal dining experience with a menu categorized by small, medium, and large plates.
A standout item on the menu is the Kebab Halabi, priced between $37 and $38. The dish features ground lamb, roasted vegetables, and tahini, prepared in a distinct manner: it is baked inside a clay pot sealed with a thin layer of pita bread. This bread dome is typically opened tableside upon service.
The Kebab Halabi, named for the Syrian city of Aleppo, incorporates roasted red and white onions, Roma tomatoes, and Italian hot peppers. The sesame-studded bread dome serves as an accompaniment for dipping into the remaining juices and tahini found at the bottom of the pot.
In addition to its signature kebab, the restaurant offers various dips, including spicy feta and hummus, often served with house-made taboon bread. Bustan’s culinary approach focuses on fresh produce, legumes, and nuts, adhering to traditional Mediterranean cooking philosophies that prioritize olive oil over butter.
Bustan operates on a varied schedule, opening Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Sundays with both lunch and dinner service hours.
