Brooklyn Man Charged in Fatal Stabbing at Long Island City High-Rise

A 36-year-old Brooklyn man is facing murder and weapons possession charges following the death of a man in Long Island City, according to law enforcement sources.

Bretford Brewer was taken into custody this week in connection with the death of 36-year-old Carlos Penzo. The victim was discovered on August 1 inside a bathtub at his residence at The Hayden, a luxury high-rise located at 43-25 Hunter Street. Investigators reported that the victim had sustained multiple stab wounds.

Preliminary information from police sources suggests that the two men had arranged to meet through social media. Authorities believe a verbal disagreement occurred during the encounter, which allegedly escalated into a fatal physical confrontation.

Following the incident, reports indicated that the suspect was observed on the roof of the 51-story building. Witnesses and police accounts suggest the individual was seen without clothing and attempting to damage security equipment, including cameras, with a fire extinguisher.

The Hayden, a prominent residential complex in the neighborhood, offers various amenities and commands high monthly rental rates. As of Thursday, the suspect was awaiting arraignment at Queens Criminal Court. The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to confirm the sequence of events leading to the discovery of the victim.
