City Sues Brooklyn Dental Practices Over Alleged Predatory Lending

The New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) has initiated legal action against two Brooklyn dental practices, Canarsie Family Dentistry and New York Family Dental, following allegations of predatory lending and deceptive business practices.

According to the lawsuit, the practices allegedly targeted patients who were in pain or otherwise vulnerable, pressuring them into signing for third-party medical payment products without clearly disclosing that the agreements were high-interest loans. The suit further claims that these offices frequently failed to submit insurance claims, despite advertising that they would do so, effectively forcing patients to finance procedures out-of-pocket through these credit products.

One patient, Yasmin Breeden of Prospect Park, shared her experience regarding a visit to Canarsie Family Dentistry. Breeden alleges that she was pressured into taking out $17,000 in loans for dental work that left her unable to eat solid foods. Her daughter, Noellie Thwaites, stated that her mother did not fully understand the financial commitments she was signing at the time. Breeden remains in debt for procedures she claims were never completed to her satisfaction.

DCWP Commissioner Sam Levine stated that the department is pursuing the litigation to secure restitution for affected patients and to deter similar conduct by other businesses. "We will not hesitate to take companies to court if they're systematically ripping people off," Levine said, noting that the investigation was prompted by multiple complaints regarding similar experiences at these locations.

The lawsuit seeks to recover funds for patients who were allegedly misled by the dental offices. As of the latest reports, neither Canarsie Family Dentistry nor New York Family Dental has provided a public response to the allegations.

City officials are advising residents to exercise caution when presented with medical payment products in a clinical setting. Patients are encouraged to thoroughly review all terms and conditions before signing any financial agreements. Those who believe they have been subjected to deceptive practices by dental providers are encouraged to report their experiences to the DCWP.
