Man Faces Criminal Charges Following Brooklyn Bridge Incident

A 44-year-old man is facing multiple criminal charges after an incident on the Brooklyn Bridge this past Sunday, August 2, 2026. According to law enforcement, the NYPD Emergency Response Unit was dispatched to the bridge around 2:30 p.m. following reports of an individual climbing the structure.

Upon arrival, officers observed the man on the north tower. Authorities initiated a closure of the pedestrian walkway to manage the scene. Before officers could establish contact, the man reportedly removed his clothing and jumped into the East River. The NYPD harbor unit conducted a rescue operation, successfully pulling the man from the water. He was subsequently transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

Investigators recovered a robe and a blanket at the site of the jump, both of which reportedly contained incoherent writing.

Police have identified the individual as Galymzhan Abaildayev. He has been charged with several offenses, including reckless endangerment, public lewdness, criminal trespass, disorderly conduct, and graffiti. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event is ongoing.
