Flash Floods Trap Motorists on Bronx River Parkway

Severe thunderstorms sweeping through the region on Tuesday triggered flash flooding that left two vehicles submerged along the Bronx River Parkway in Bronxville. The incident occurred beneath the Palmer Avenue overpass, where the Bronx River swelled beyond its banks, effectively erasing the boundary between the waterway and the roadway.

As water levels rose rapidly, two motorists became trapped in the deluge. According to accounts from the scene, the situation escalated quickly, with one driver describing a sudden wave that overwhelmed his vehicle. Emergency personnel were able to reach the stranded individuals, utilizing ropes to guide them to safety. No injuries were reported during the rescue operations.

Local officials and the Department of Public Works were deployed to the area to manage the overflow. Efforts were focused on pumping water back into the river channel to prevent the flooding from encroaching upon nearby village infrastructure.

Residents reported intense weather conditions throughout the evening, with some describing the severity of the storm as startling. While the immediate danger to the motorists was mitigated by rescue teams, the impact of the storm left significant portions of the parkway inundated. As of early Wednesday, it remained unclear when the affected section of the parkway would be cleared and reopened for regular traffic.
