Bronx Man Indicted on Multiple Charges of Child Sexual Abuse

A 42-year-old Bronx resident, Stephen Charles, has been indicted on a wide array of charges following a multi-year investigation into the sexual abuse of six minors. Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark announced the indictment on Monday, detailing a series of alleged crimes that spanned from 2018 through May 2026.

Charles, also known as "Jay," was arraigned on August 3 before Supreme Court Justice Eugene Bowen. He faces an extensive list of felony counts, including predatory sexual assault against a child, first-degree rape, and multiple counts of criminal sexual acts and sexual abuse. Prosecutors further allege that the defendant engaged in the production and possession of sexual performances involving children.

According to the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, the alleged abuse occurred at several locations, including two family shelters located at 1056 Boynton Avenue and 115 Henwood Place, as well as the defendant’s own apartment on Grace Avenue. Investigators claim that Charles, who lived in the shelters with his own children, manipulated vulnerable minors to facilitate the abuse. The victims included his own biological son and the son of a former partner.

Evidence in the case reportedly includes witness accounts and digital recordings recovered from cell phones. The investigation into the pattern of abuse involved detectives from the 43rd, 46th, and 47th precincts. Charles was taken into custody by police on the night of July 31 within the 50th Precinct.

"This defendant allegedly preyed on vulnerable children over the course of several years," District Attorney Clark stated following the indictment. "We will get justice for these innocent children and their families."

As of the most recent court proceedings, Charles is being held without bail. He is scheduled to return to court on September 1. The New York City Department of Homeless Services has not yet provided a statement regarding the security protocols at the facilities mentioned in the indictment or whether any internal reviews are underway following the allegations.

The case remains active as prosecutors prepare for further proceedings.
