Quieter Generator Installed at 9th Precinct Following Noise Complaints

Residents living near the NYPD’s 9th Precinct on East 5th Street have seen a change in the equipment powering the stationhouse. Last week, a quieter generator was installed to replace a louder unit that had been in operation since early summer.

The original generator was deployed after an electrical failure compromised the building’s internal power supply, impacting critical infrastructure such as air conditioning, internet connectivity, and telephone systems. While the replacement unit has addressed immediate noise concerns for neighbors, the underlying electrical issues at the stationhouse remain unresolved.

According to a source familiar with the situation, officials explored various mitigation strategies, including the installation of noise-dampening equipment on the original generator, before opting for the replacement. The source indicated that no noise complaints have been reported since the new unit was put into service.

Despite the upgrade, the precinct continues to operate on temporary power. There is currently no established timeline for when the building’s permanent electrical service will be restored. When asked about the status of the repairs, the source noted that the cause of the electrical deficiency remains under investigation and that updates on a permanent fix are not yet available.
